  15. political philosopher and anti-Communist; in Stanford, Calif.
  16. A disciple of the pragmatist philosopher John Dewey at Columbia
  17. University and a faculty member there for 42 years, Hook, a
  18. Marxist scholar, was among the earliest critics of Stalinism.
  19. His opposition to extremism in any form was a major theme in his
  20. 1987 autobiography, Out Of Step: An Unquiet Life In The 20th
  21. Century.
